Navigating Autism Conversations: Best Practices for Talking to Children About Their Diagnosis
*Deze sessie is Engelstalig
Samenvatting
The way that an autism diagnosis is disclosed to parents has been found to play a crucial role in their acceptance of, and the way they cope with, their child’s diagnosis. Yet research into parents’ experiences of disclosing a diagnosis to their children, and talking to their families about autism more generally, is limited. In this talk, Professor Crane will summarise existing research on talking to children about sensitive topics, reflecting on how we can apply this knowledge to the area of autism. She will also share the results of her ongoing research, where parents (autistic and non-autistic) were asked about their experiences of talking to children about their diagnosis, and autistic adults were asked to share their experiences of learning they were autistic in childhood. Best practice principles for talking to children about their diagnosis, as well as good practice case examples, will be shared.
